Continuing this regular series, "Learning Services: In Focus" features a different member of the team each week.  This week it is the turn of, Luke Farber.

I am a Learning Content Developer Apprentice; I joined the team in May 2018. As part of the apprenticeship I am enrolled on the Digital and Technology Solutions Professional Degree: Software Engineering.

My role responsibilities are:

  • To constantly be adaptive and receptive to new technologies that could have an educational benefit.

  • To learn the core languages of web development to maintain and develop our online resources and content.

  • To assist in the physical space through recording lectures as well as other tasks as required

My core aims, beyond completing the degree are to:

  • Gain a fundamental understanding of the services we provide, and offer a digital expertise viewpoint to any discussions around what we could change and/or do.

  • Get involved with as many projects as possible to firstly network with people and secondly, gain a truer understanding of the projects and changes which are implemented, both throughout the Department of Learning Services, as well as the wider university.

Having worked at AXA Insurance in Ipswich for 6 years, I wanted to pursue a career change that actively lined up with my personal interests, and the skillsets I wish to obtain. I applied for the LCDA role as it was a perfect opportunity for me to gain the qualifications I want, whilst doing work I love doing.

I am genuinely thrilled to be a part of the team and keen to learn and do as much as I can here; especially as I gain applicable skills.

Outside Interests

  • Board Games
I own around 150 board games at the time of writing this. I also started, managed and ran a successful gaming group for just over two years. I have since handed over the ownership to someone else, but still regularly attend.

  • Technology
I enjoy the world of technology and try to keep up to date in a general sense of what’s available. Recently been fascinated with android/artificial intelligence development. I’m also a bit of a Nintendo fanatic in the entertainment space.

  • Walking
Over the last year, I have gained an appreciation of just exploring different places through extended walks at the weekend. Whilst this has been primarily Ipswich based, I will be doing some more established paths around the country over the following months.
