As the Director of Learning and Teaching, I lead the Department of Library and Learning Services and the Centre for Excellence in Learning and Teaching (CELT). It is my responsibility to ensure that our staff have the support, resources and development opportunities to deliver excellent, research informed and employer engaged degree programmes. I also enable my team of Librarians, Academic Skills Advisors and Digital Learning Designers  to directly respond to, support and enhance the learning, teaching and research opportunities offered at the University of Suffolk. We work collaboratively with partners across our professional services and academic course teams to develop the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in further study or employment.

The remit of the directorate includes provision of

  • staff development in pedagogic theory and practices;
  • course design and review resources and activities;
  • leading work to achieve the aspirations of our Access and Participation Plan;
  • academic, maths, digital and information literacy support;
  • open Access Repository (OARS) and open access publication guidance;
  • Online Learning Environment (OLE);
  • library collections;
  • support for validation and course design events.

I began my library career in Surrey County Libraries, where I worked while completing my first degree in Italian, and subsequent Masters in Information Management (Librarianship). After graduating with my MA in 2000, I began my first professional role working for an Executive Agency of Defra supporting scientists in their research to detect and prevent the spread of zoonotic diseases. During this time there were a number of disease outbreaks, including Classical Swine Fever and Foot and Mouth Disease and the work of our team was critical in ensuring government vets, scientists and ministers had access to up-to-date information and the latest international research.

In 2007 I left the Civil Service and moved into Higher Education, managing and developing front of house services at the shared Tremough Campus of the University of Falmouth and University of Exeter. I arrived at University Campus Suffolk as Library Services Manager in 2011.
