About Library & Learning Services: Withdrawn Resources Policy

What happens to books removed from the Library collection?

The Library is committed to green and sustainable collection management. The print collections naturally evolve over time, and in the same way that we are always buying new titles into the collection, sometimes we also need to remove older titles from the collection, either because they are no longer relevant to our users, because they have been superseded by a new edition, or because their condition has deteriorated too much.

To ensure our books are given a second chance and disposed of responsibly, we have a longstanding partnership with a book reuse and recycling service, the Book Rescuers. The Book Rescuers are first and foremost a second-hand bookseller and resale a large percentage of the books that they collect, of which we receive a portion of the sales money.

Books that aren't resold are donated to their Charity Partners and earmarked for those less fortunate within and out the UK. Books that they have not been able to sell over time are eventually recycled responsibly, as are the books their Charity Partners have advised them that they cannot accept because of their own screening requirements.

Our sales have contributed to over £10,430 the Book Rescuers have raised for their partner charities since 2020.

The Rainbow Centre

The Rainbow Centre Sri Lanka provides daily education, food, welfare, medical treatment and loving support to children living in extreme poverty in southwestern Sri Lanka. Its key aim is to enable children to obtain an education. The Rainbow Centre is helping children to break free from a cycle of poverty that would otherwise trap them in a world of crime, begging, addiction and abuse. Doorstep Library

Doorstep Library is a community-focused charity dedicated to bringing the gift of books and the joy of reading directly into the homes of children across London who need our support. With one in four 11-year-olds leaving primary school unable to read or write properly, we recruit and train home and online-reading volunteers to go into some of the most under-resourced areas of London to help introduce young children (aged 0-11 years) to the pleasure and benefits of reading. Our ultimate goal is to help them develop the self-confidence and essential skills they need to access all the opportunities that will come their way in life.
