Overdue Fines

It is important that you return your books on or in advance of the stated due dates. Books not returned on time will incur the below charges:

3-Week Loan 20p per item per day
1-Week Loan 50p per item per day
24-Hour Loan £1.00 per item per day

You do not have to repay overdue charges immediately, and they will not incur interest.

Please note that if your fines accumulate to £10.00 or over, a print loan stop will be automatically placed on your account. This will prevent you from loaning or reserving any further items until your total charges are below £10.00.

Please note that print loan stops will also be incurred if items become very overdue (over 8 weeks). This will prevent you from loaning or reserving any further items until the corresponding items are returned to the library.

How do I pay overdue fees or charges?

Fees and charges can be paid at the library helpdesk or self-service kiosks in cash, or on the Online Shop via card.

What do I do if I've damaged a book?

If you've damaged a book, bring it directly to the library helpdesk when you return it. Library staff will assess the damage and decide what to do on an ad hoc basis. We'll only ever charge you if the damage was due to circumstances within your control (e.g., water damage), and the book needs to be replaced.

Charges are determined based on how much it costs to replace the item. Charges will be added directly to your library account and can be paid as described above. If you'd prefer to source a replacement copy of the item yourself (in new or very good condition), charges will be removed upon receipt of the replacement.

What do I do if I've lost a book?

If you think you've lost a book, we encourage you to look thoroughly at home, in your car, and in any other place you could have left the item. It can be helpful to find a picture of the book's cover art and spine so you know exactly what you're looking for.

If you're sure the item is lost, let the staff at the Library Helpdesk know (in person, via phone, email or live chat). We'll conduct three thorough library searches, just in case it was returned to us.

If we're not able to find it, you will be charged for the cost of the item. Charges will be added directly to your library account and can be paid as described above. If you'd prefer to source a replacement copy of the item yourself (in new or very good condition), charges will be removed upon receipt of the replacement.

If you find the item, and:

  • The unpaid charge is still on your account, said charges will be removed upon return of the item.
  • You have already paid the charge, you are entitled to keep the lost book (we are unable to refund paid charges).
  • You have already sourced a replacement, you can keep either the replacement or the lost item.

What do I do if I've returned a book, but it's still on my account?

If you think you've returned a book but it's still on your account, we recommend that you first conduct a thorough search at home, in your car, and in any other place you could have left the item. It can be helpful to find a picture of the book's cover art and spine so you know exactly what it is you're looking for.

If you're sure the item is not at home, let the staff at the Library Helpdesk know (in person, via phone, email or live chat). We'll conduct three thorough library searches to look for the item. Unfortunately, if we are unable to find the item and you cannot provide proof that you have returned it (e.g., a dated receipt), we must assume that it is still in your possession. To this end, you will be charged for the cost of the item.
