Learning and Teaching for Apprenticeships

Guidance for the design, delivery and review of learning, teaching and assessment for apprenticeships.

Lesson Plans

For each lesson, a full lesson plan should be produced which provides structure, and ensures that all the required aspects of learning, teaching and assessment are covered in your delivery. Your lesson plan should be retained by you as part of your course learning and teaching resources, and must be readily available if required as part of any monitoring inspections.

Content for your plan

Your lesson plan should include everything that you need to do as part of the preparation for and delivery of your lesson. This includes:

  • Completion of the attendance register
  • Lesson learning outcomes
  • Publishing of lesson resources complete in Brightspace
  • Lesson learning outcomes
  • Learning activities to achieve outcomes
  • How characteristics and attributes are demonstrated and developed (i.e., resilience, ownership, optimism, ambition, respect, self-control, confidence, curiosity)
  • Expected behaviours during the lesson, and a reminder to challenge if needed
  • Recapping on the previous lesson to link learning
  • Introducing the lesson learning and learning outcomes
  • How the understanding of application of learning is tested
  • How the achievement of learning outcomes is tested for each learner, with reference to the group profile and any required differentiation
  • How are the following embedded, evidenced and tested in the lesson?
    • British values (behaviours, health and safety, respect)
    • English (for example through group discussion)
    • Maths
  • Extension activities to stretch and challenge learners to further their learning - in / post class and expectations for completion
  • Session evaluation and feedback
  • Question and answers
  • Explanation of the next session and any expected preparatory activities
