Web Accessibility & Guide Checklist (Internal LibGuides)

This checklist includes both design elements which need to be considered and also specific Web Content Accessibility Guideline (WCAG) specifications where appropriate.

Finer technical details will be marked in RED and dealt with by a one of the Digital Learning Designers.
Tutorials on how to complete certain tasks are highlighted in GREEN.

The checklist below should be run through by the guide/information owner and is a specific list for the creation of Workshop guides, it should also be seen as an addition to the 'General Guidance' checklist which has to also be adhered to.

Workshop Checklist

  • Left menu style.
    • Any page which isn't a Reading and Resource page should have a sidebar menu which is to the left of the screen. This needs to be done so we can keep a consistent style and layout to all of our pages.
    • Tutorial - Navigation Layout
  • Workshop owner under left menu.
    • A box showing the profile of the guide owner should be shown below the left menu with contact details and photo
    • Tutorial - Updating Profile
  • Profile box on left needs to float.
  • Logical order/flow of content on page.
    • This is very important to maintain a visitors attention and engagement with the content on the page. There needs to be a logical flow to the content on the page making sure the visitor is taken through a narrative of what's happening on the page, what actions do they need to take, where should they go and what do they need to learn. It's important that any content the visitors need to see is on the guide and not hidden away in a downloadable document. Simply uploading a PowerPoint presentation will not suffice as these tend to have slides in with little context to the content on the slide. This is also not accessible for visitors who might not have a program to open the presentation up in.
  • Headings (H3/H4) need to be used, not change size of text. (WCAG - 2.4.10)
    • Headings need to be used in web pages to tell assistive technologies the structure of the site. This is the same principle of making sure Word documents are structured also using the Headings styles. When you add or edit text in LibGuides, or Brightspace for that matter, you need to make sure headings or sub-headings need to be styled as such and not just text that had been highlighted and the size mad bigger and made bold.
    • Tutorial - Using Styles
  • Must have 'Resources' menu item with downloadable content which is used in the guide.
    • If there are any supplementary materials used in the guide or workshop, these need to be collected into one resource menu item in the left menu.
    • Each resource should also have some descriptive text telling the visitor what the resource contains.
  • Group type is set accordingly / Group workshop etc.
    • In the properties of the guide you will need to indicate what part of our LibGuides site it belongs to e.g Skills Development/Academic Literacy
